Our Story
Rooted in a village
built for export.
Mallika Coir Products is based in Alappuzha district, Kerala a coastline where coir-making has been a way of life for generations. We make one product: a natural coir fabric, woven from hand-spun coconut husk yarn, supplied to specification for erosion control, agriculture, and land restoration projects around the world.
The name Mallika means jasmine something small, persistent, and quietly fragrant. That is the standard we hold our work to.
We are not a trading house and we do not resell. Every roll that leaves our workshop was retted, spun, and woven within the same district it is labelled from.
The people

Coir spinning in Kerala is largely the work of women, seated at the ratt the traditional hand-operated spinning wheel — drawing fibre into yarn with a skill passed down through generations.
Mallika works directly with coir artisan cooperatives in Alappuzha district. No subcontractors. No middlemen. Fair wages, consistent order volumes, long-term relationships.
The process
From husk to fabric five steps,
no shortcuts.

Retting
Fresh coconut husks are bundled and submerged in the backwater for four to eight weeks. The brackish water softens the husk and loosens the long golden fibres from the woody core. This step cannot be rushed without compromising fibre quality.

Defibring
Retted husks are beaten to separate the long, spinnable fibre from the shorter bristle and pith. Only the long fibre goes forward into yarn.

Spinning
The fibre is fed into the ratt by hand, drawn and twisted into yarn in a single continuous motion. The evenness of the yarn depends entirely on the skill of the spinner this is the step machines have never replaced well.

Weaving
Yarn is woven into the net-type fabric structure at the specified GSM and width engineered for strength and an open weave that allows vegetation to establish through it.

Finishing & Inspection
Every roll is trimmed, wound, and visually inspected before packing. A person checks every roll. No automated quality control replaces that.
Our position
We chose to do
one thing well.
Many coir suppliers spread across rope, matting, doormats, and fibre. We chose to specialise in a single product natural coir fabric and get very good at the variations that actually matter to the people who buy it: GSM, weave density, roll width, and roll length.
That focus means tighter quality control, more consistent lead times, and a team that can answer a technical specification question in detail, not in generalities.
